Nature
Ulu Temburong National Park
Brunei’s most famous natural tourist attraction, this easily accessible 50,000 ha park offers a pristine tropical rainforest environment with amazing ecological diversity only a short distance away from the capital, allowing visitors to sample in a day trip the full Borneo jungle experience, complete with a thrilling canopy walk above the treetops. Overnight stays in comfortable accommodation are also possible for a more fulfilling experience.
Pulau Selirong
This small island a short boat ride away from downtown Bandar contains some of Asia’s best preserved mangrove forest environments and harbors an array of exotic wildlife, including the flying colugos and myriads of fireflies putting on an amazing light show at night.
Tasek Merimbun
Less than an hour away from the capital lies this ASEAN Heritage Site, an S shaped black water lake whose level ebbs and rises depending on rainfall. Fringed by sedge fields and towering lowland rainforest vegetation, this isolated and preternaturally peaceful ecological site offers interesting wildlife and bird watching opportunities.
Proboscis Monkeys
Found only on the island of Borneo, Nasalis Larvatus, commonly known as Proboscis Monkey, is an odd looking, pot bellied and long tailed monkey that lives in mangrove forested areas and feeds exclusively on leafs. The male of the species sports a large, pendulous nose giving it a unique appearance. Several groups of the monkey live in the mangrove forests a short boat ride from the capital, making Brunei the easiest place to see them in the wild.
Forest reserves, recreational parks and waterfalls
Being mostly covered by pristine rainforests due to the near absence of logging activities, Brunei abounds with protected natural areas, many of which have facilities such as demarcated trails, public toilets, picnic areas and playgrounds.
Beaches and marine attractions
Brunei has a long, undeveloped coastline of sandy beaches lapped by the South China Seas, ideal for those who prefer avoiding the beach resort scene, as there is only one resort by the beach and a handful of beaches with amenities, leaving most of the coastline in its natural state. Underwater, and only a short distance by boat from shore, pristine coral reefs and a number of shipwrecks teem with colorful marine life, making Brunei a richly endowed new frontier for diving enthusiasts.
